Here's a bit of an update on what we've been doing lately...
We have just finished a unit on graphing--in particular double-bar graphs! There were many opportunities to survey classmates, teachers, and look for online data in order to create our own double-bar graphs.
We are now going to be moving onto a bit of a mixture of units that include "motion geometry" and multiplication.
In motion geography we will learn to:

We have just finished a unit on graphing--in particular double-bar graphs! There were many opportunities to survey classmates, teachers, and look for online data in order to create our own double-bar graphs.
We are now going to be moving onto a bit of a mixture of units that include "motion geometry" and multiplication.
In motion geography we will learn to:
- Perform, describe, and identify translations of 2-D shapes
- Perform and identify reflections of shapes
- Reflect shapes on a grid and describe the position and orientation
- Perform, describe, and identify rotations of shapes
- Describe transformations using math language
Here is some important vocabulary to understand for this unit...
Translation: the result of sliding a shape along a straight line
Reflection: the result of flipping a 2-D shape across a line of reflection
Line of Reflection: a line that falls exactly halfway between the points of a shape and the matching points of its reflections
Line of Reflection: a line that falls exactly halfway between the points of a shape and the matching points of its reflections
Orientation: when the orientation of a shape changes, the vertices (corners) of the shape will be in a different order
Rotation: the result of turning a shape
As for multiplication, we will be playing many multiplication games and reviewing our basic facts. In grade 5 we are working on 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication, and in order to be successful in these questions one needs to know their basic facts. Please feel free to check out the links at the side under "EXTRA PRACTICE". There are TONS of fun multiplication games that help you to practice your extra facts without you really even realizing you are doing math :)
Good luck grade 5!
